Trinidad and Tobago scored it's first boxing triumph at the Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games.

When Middleweight AlexieAlexander defeated P.R.D.A. Fernando of Sri Lanka 21:14.

Meanwhile Mrs Glenda Morean,T&T High Commissioner to London visited the T&T team.Mrs Morean had lunch with the team at the Games village.The visiting party included Bhp Billition representative Leslie St John and Paul Newallo ,Director of Sport in the Ministry of Sport and Youth Affairs.

The Bhp Billiton sponsored T&T Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games team is in buoyant spirit going into the start of the track and field programme which gets underway today(Sunday).

Chef de Mission Mushtaque Mohammed said there has been some "gutsy" displays so far across all the disciplines."The athletes have so far competed with tremendous pride and determination.I am very pleased with the level of discipline and focus".

Mohammed however revealed some members of the delegation seem to be coming down with the virus.However the situation is been closely monitored by the medical team and there is no cause for unncessary alarm.

Darrell Brown was inconsolable following his 10.79 effort in Round two of the 100m Heats.Brown pulled up during the race but continued to finish the race literally on one leg his Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Gold dream dashed.

An MRI confirmed the worse fears a torn hamstring will end his active participation in Melbourne.

It is an understatement to say the T&T camp is disappointed.Officials tried to keep a brave face as both Marc Burns and Jacey Harper remained in the Mens 100m fray.

While in the Fana ashby and Ayana Hutchinson have both advanced to the second round in the Women 100m.

The athletics programme got underway in front of 75000 spectators at the MCG.They were treated to a titanic marathon battle as Australian Kerryn McCann and Kenya's Hellen Koskei waged a shoulder to shoulder battle for gold.

McCann prevailed to claim the gold by two seconds.The roar of the 75000 crowd could be heard three miles away.

For T&T however there was little to cheer about as the reality of a Darrell Brownless 100m relay dawned.

Marc Burns battled back from a poor start to win the bronze medal in the blue riband men's 100 M final as day five of the Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games came to an end.

In front of a packed Melbourne Cricket Ground the 2005 TTOC Sportsman of the year showed his class when overcame a disastrous start to produce a 10.17 time. Asafa Powell took gold in 10.03.Nigeria's Soji Fasuba took home silver in 10.11 secs.

Burns run was described by Antigua and Barbuda Secretary-General Leroy Williams as "miraculous". "To claim a medal at a major meet like this after such a start is a tremendous effort. I tip my hat to the courage of the young man. He would do well at the 200m"said Williams.

TTOC President Larry Romany also commended the feat. "Marc showed the heart of a champion , tremendous composure and focus to put the poor start behind him to win the bronze medal"said Romany.

Earlier Burns won his semi final in 10.15 secs to signal that he would be in the medal hunt.

It all almost came to nil to the chagrin of the T&T supporters among the 76000 crowd .However despair soon turned to red ,black and white elation and pride.

There is a growing confidence in the T&T camp following the bronze medal acheivements of both Marc Burns(100M ) and Roger Daniel(50 M PISTOL).

As the 2006 Commonwealth Games head to day 7 in Melbourne.There is a spring in the step and a renewed self belief.

Day 7 may just bring more hardware a not unrealistic expectation with action in the men's air pistol,men's trap and women's shot put on the cards.

In other day 7 action Kevon Pierre,Julieon Raeburn ,Aaron Armstrong and Sherridan Kirk will carry the T&T flag into battle at the MCG in the hope of advancing to the semi-finals of the 200 and 800 track event.

On the shooting range nineteen year old Robert Aeurbach the youngest competitor in the men's trap shoot event and Roger Daniel brimming with confidence and a bronze medal will contest the men's 10M air pistol competition .Both Daniel and Aeurbach have medal aspirations in mind.

In the women's shot put Cleopatra Borel- Brown is also expected to be in the medal hunt.

Meanwhile tonight at 9pm Melbourne time(6 am TT) there will be a brief function in the T&T camp at the Games Village to honour Marc Burns and Roger Daniel a presentation will be made to the duo on behalf of the entire Bhp Billition sponsored T&T Melbourne 2006 delegation.

Roger Daniel won his first ever Commonwealth games medal when he shot his way to the bronze medal in the men's 50M pistol event.

Daniel finished 6th in this same event in Manchester in 2002.

The 36 year old soldier kept his composure to move from 6th position to third with a determined final round performance.

India's Samaresh Jung won the gold while England's Mike Gault took the silver medal.

The Bhp Billiton sponsored T&T team's medal tally at the Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth games is now two bronze .At the 2002 Manchester Commonwealth Games T&T came away with one medal.Kerston Manswell silver medal in boxing.

In other action on day six the T&T men's hockey team lost 7-1 to Pakistan.

Pakistan led 6-1 at half time.But a determined T&T frustrated their world rated opponents to a one goal second half.T&T threatened the Pakistan goal one more than one occasion only be denied by excellent goal keeping from the Pakistani keeper.

Pakistan themselves were denied in the second half by a brilliant Glenn Francis in the T&T goal.

Meanwhile T&T OC President Larry Romany will present the medals to the winners of the men's 50M freestyle final.

Cleopatra Borel -Brown repulsed a challenge from Gui Zhang of Singapore to win the bronze medal in the women's shot put at the Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games.

Brown who placed fourth at the Manchester 2002 Commonwealth Games regained third position on her fifth attempt following a 17.87 throw .

New Zealand's Valerie Vili established a games record in her gold medal 19.66m throw.Nigerian Vivian Chukwuemka 18.25 best effort was good for the silver medal.

Day seven at the Melbourne Cricket Ground(MCG) also saw excellent from Aaron Armstrong who advanced to the semi-final in the men's 200m.Armstrong placed third(20.78) in his round two heat.

Sherridan Kirk showed that fortune favours the brave as his enterprising run in his 800m heat saw the Tobagonian taking first place (1.49.11)to earn a place in tomorrow's final.

As the curtain came down on day seven of the 18th Commonwealth Games the Bhp Billition sponsored T&T team medal count now stood at three.

TTOC President Larry Romany expressed joy at the achievement of Cleopatra Borel."The TTOC has worked very closely with Cleopatra over the years and she is an excellent athlete her success is well deserved"said Romany

Romany also noted that Sherridan Kirk's run reflected the determination of the T&T team to dare to dream .

Tomorrow(Thursday) team T&T will return to the MCG for Borel's medal ceremony,the men's 200m and the 800m final.

Sherridan Kirk ran his heart out in a brave effort to claim a medal in his first appearance in a Commonwealth Games 800m final.He came close finishing fourth in a time of 1.47.45 .

It maybe no consolation at the moment but 25 year old Kirk can take courage from his exploits at the Melbourne Cricket Grounds (MCG).

The Tobagonian was off his personal best(1.45.43) but had bettered his Manchester 2002 performance when he went out at the semi-final stage.Kirk showed that he belongs on the world stage in an event that is not for the fainthearted.His improvement since the Athens Olympic noticeable.

The MCG was rocking as 82000 spectators created a theater of dreams for Australian 400M hurdler Jana Pittman.

The atmosphere was electric for all other events on the night's schedule. The 800m finals preceded the women's 400 m hurdles final.

The 200 m final came after.Jana Pittman did not disappoint winning the gold medal in a games record 53.82.The roar of 82000 sports fans had to be heard words cannot explain.

In the men's 200m final Aaron Armstrong gave it his all but his 20.61 effort saw him finishing fifth.Earlier Armstrong representing T&T for the first time at a Commonwealth Games claimed second (20.59)in the semi-final.

Cleopatra Borel-Brown medal presentation was on the billing a fitting touch by the organizers.By the time the women's shot put event was finished the night before the stadium was near empty.The women shot putters deserved a better audience. 82000 was more like it.

So as the curtain came down on day 8 there was tangible cheer for the Bhp Billition sponsored Melbourne 2006 T&T team.

For Sherridan Kirk and Aaron Armstrong they would have to put aside their personal disappointment and get ready for the relay event tomorrow.

Trinidad and Tobago crashed out of the 100M relay heats while the 4 x 400m relay team qualified for the final.

To say it is a major disappointment would be an understatement on paper the 100 m relay was one event where T&T expected to be in the gold medal hunt.

On a balmy night at the MCG T&Ts hopes came undone as the 4 X 100M relay team comprising Kevon Pierre,Marc Burns,Jacey Harper and Aaron Armstrong failed to finish in heat one.Nigeria also suffered the same fate .

Not that it would be any consolation but on the night defending Commonwealth 100m relay champions England also did not finish as disaster struck with England leading heading into the final leg of heat two.

All three teams were expected to battle Jamaica,Ghana and Australia in a much anticipated 100m relay final.

The T&T 4 X 400m team showed character in shaking off what ever disappointment they would have felt at the fate of their teammates and made no mistake in qualifying second in their heat the quartet of Damion Barry,Julieon Raeburn,Sherridan Kirk and Ato Modibo produced a 3.04.14 time to ensure passage to the final.

Tomorrow night's 400m relay final will be a tough battle with Jamaica,Bahamas,Australia,England,Nigeria and T&T all in the fray.

In hockey T&T went down to Canada two- nil in their final match .

While over at the Melbourne Gun Club nineteen year old Robert Auerbach was ranked 21st after day one qualification.

So as day ten beckons T&T will look back at day nine of these Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games with a mixture of joy and sorrow as they contemplate the vagaries of sport the great equalizer.

Commonwealth 2006 50 M pistol bronze medalist Defence Force Lance Corporal Roger Daniel will carry the T&T flag at the closing ceremony of the 18Th Commonwealth Games.

The Thirty-six year old soldier said it is an honour to be selected to carry your country's flag at a major international games.

According to Mushtaque Mohammed Chef DE mission of the Bhp Billition sponsored Trinidad and Tobago Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games team.The three athletes in consideration would have been Daniel ,Marc Burns and Cleopatra Borel- Brown all three won bronze medals at the Games.

The process was simplified with Burns and Borel -Brown having to depart Melbourne before the closing ceremony.

"I am fortunate in not having to make a difficult decision.Burns having carried the flag at the opening ceremony may not have factored it would have been down to Cleo or Roger"said Mohammed.

Mohammed reflecting on his first Chef DE Mission duties at a Games under the auspices of the TTOC said it has been a tremendous learning experience.

"To be honest it has been a reality check.The role of Chef DE mission is an onerous one under the TTOC dispensation since 1997.I have not had a moments rest here in Melbourne but I have had great support from Annette Knott ,General Team manager".

I thank the President Larry Romany and the executive committee for affording me the opportunity to serve in this capacity.

The locally based members of the team including Roger Daniel will depart Melbourne on Monday 27Th their arrival in Trinidad is scheduled for Tuesday 28Th March.

Trinidad and Tobago's LeJuan Simon's season best leap of 16.59 earned him a fifth place finish in the men's triple jump final. Teammate Christopher Hercules finished two places lower (7th) with a 16.47 effort .

It was a night of high drama at the MCG as the curtain came down on the Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games track and field programme .

In front of 83000 spectators Australia won both the men's and women's 4 x 400m relays.

England won the women's 400m relay.The English ladies however were disqualified for a lane violation.There were many twist and turns on the night. The Jamaican ladies were leading the race by five metres when the gold medal slipped from their hands in the baton exchange between Novelene Williams and Shellene Williams.

Earlier in the men's 4 X 100m final Australia marginally in front coming into the final bungled their hand over and did not finish (DNF). Ghana also DNF as the epidemic of baton changing snafu continued.

In the 1500m Final Australian Gold medal hopeful Craig Mortram stumbled and crashed to the ground to the despair of the home town crowd.Mortram got up with his chance of a medal effectively dashed he courageously continued to finish the race.

What a night it was at the MCG.

Meanwhile over at the Melbourne Gun Club in Lilydale T&Ts nineteen year old shooter Robert Aeurbach finsihed in 24th position in the men's skeet competition.

As the Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games heads into it's final day and the closing ceremony.

Trinidad and Tobago's cyclist Emile Abraham will be the sole local in action as he take on a high class field in the 180 km road cycling race.

Among the field of 136 listed starters the Australians who took gold,silver and bronze in Manchester will hope to repeat that feat in frontof the home town support t expected to pack the 11 km course which runs through the streets of Melbourne and surrounding suburbs.

Negotiation, Financial Management and Conflict Resolution are three of the hot topics to be addressed at an upcoming Sport Administration Workshop.

The workshop will be hosted by the Trinidad & Tobago Alliance for Sport & Physical Education (TTASPE), in collaboration with the Trinidad & Tobago Olympic Committee (TTOC).

The 5-day programme at Jean Pierre Complex is open to all local sport federations, and starts on Wednesday 29th March at 1.45pm.

The highly interactive sessions are designed to take participants through a process involving the development of skills and expertise such as negotiation, club and association formation, writing skills, conflict resolution, volunteer management and finance.

Course facilitator Neil Finlay explained: “During the workshop participants create a sport, develop the governing federation and then go on to host a mock tournament. This allows them to put the knowledge into practice and they become familiar with all the ‘need to knows’ for organising a sport body and conducting successful events.”

Finlay is affiliated to TTASPE through the Australian Caribbean Community Sports Development Programme (ACCSDP), which is funded by the Australian Sports Commission. He has successfully hosted similar regional programmes in Dominica, St Kitts, St Lucia, St Vincent, Tortola and in south Trinidad.

“This ACCSDP workshop series aims to set the scene and provide essential knowledge for those involved in sport. Following the initial programme, other workshops or courses would be conducted depending on each country’s needs and priorities. Some follow through activities may include planning (at all levels), organisational and professional development, sport system and coaching/officiating development, as well as sport database development and use,” revealed Finlay.

The Trinidad and Tobago Olympic Committee (TTOC)will undertake a comprehensive review of all aspects of the Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games.

The TTOC will expedite this process as the Central and American and Caribbean(CAC) Games is scheduled for July in Colombia.

"We need to assess the performances in Melbourne and continue the push forward.No games can be taken in isolation as we build up to Beijing".

"In this context the upcoming CAC Games is important .The expectation is that all our top athletes will make themselves available to represent the country at the CAC Games"said TTOC President Larry Romany.

The TTOC in partnership with the Ministry of Sport, National Governing Bodies and The IOC have established the infrastructure that provides financial support for selected Elite athletes.

In addition the TTOC is providing ongoing training foradministrators and coaches in areas such as talent identification sport science,nutrition and sport administration to name a few.

The High performance initiative is intended to increase this country's medal count at Games under the auspices of the TTOC.

In 1997 TTOC started the process of a rolling quadrennial by quadrennial strategic plan.The current quadrennial ends with Beijing.

In Melbourne the TTOC President and Secretary General held a range of formal and informal meetings as part of TTOC's ongoing commitment to implement best practices in all areas of it's High performance and total participation programmes.

The TTOC has worked closely with the Australian Institute of Sport,Canadian and British Olympic association and Olympic Solidarity in creating it's High Performance infrastructure.

Emile Abraham defied the odds.The only T&T cyclist in a 127 cyclist field. A grueling 166 km course that required the cyclists to traverse 15 laps of a 11 km course that had for good measure three gut wrenching hills.

Abraham self confident as ever started with the intention to medal the odds never deterred him.

At the end he did not achieve his objective but the gutsy Tobagonian gave his all.

Thirty -five hardy souls unbroken by the course and the 40 km per hour average pace finished the race.Nine two cyclists found the pace and course too tough .

Abraham completed the course in 24Th position five minutes and fifteen seconds behind the winner .

With one lap to go Abraham was forty -one seconds behind the leader.Unfortunately a cramp in the last lap put paid to his aspirations.

An effort that cannot be measured by his failure to medal.Ninety two others quit Abraham did not.

It was with a great deal of pride and emotion that I walked out on to the MCG on Wednesday 15th March 2006 with my T&T team mates, in the opening ceremony of the Commonwealth Games. I had only arrived in the village that morning but had already been made to feel part of a team that had already been there together for a couple of days. It was great to see some of the “familiar” faces from Manchester as well as making some new friends.

The triathlon race day was simply amazing. When doing the course familiarisation it was apparent to me that this course was purpose built for spectators and boy was I right!

It was awesome, many of my friends and family were able to make the trip over from Perth to watch and support me and I was able to see and hear them four times on every run and bike lap. Plus Jason Gooding from T&T Triathlon and a couple other friends from Perth were there in an official capacity and I heard my name so many times from so many people that I felt like I was racing at home in Perth!! The size of the crowd was huge - no part of the course was unpopulated, but around the transition area and Luna Park it was 5-6 people deep and they didn't care where you were in the field, they clapped and cheered long and hard anyway.

The pace in the swim was incredible, I could not believe how fast they all swam. In Manchester, the lead girls swam fast, but with the rest strung out behind them I was able to pick up a few girls along the way in the ride to form a reasonable pack. I guess this race was a reflection of how the swim in triathlon has advanced in 4 years.

I was lucky enough to get out of the water with a girl called Karen from Bermuda, but I am not sure what she did in transition as I was out of there before she even had her wetsuit off and thus I resigned myself to a solo 40km bike effort. Which was fine. I felt great, if a little cold and went as hard as I could maintaining good rhythm and cadence and just enjoying the support of the crowd. I set myself a little goal while out there of not getting lapped and was happy to achieve that.

Once on to the run and again I was just happy to be feeling good after riding 40km solo and concentrated on holding my form and running as hard as I could. Again, I was trying not to get lapped but in the end couldn’t hold off Emma Snowsill who got me about 300m before the finish. Happy to hold the rest off though J

At the end of the day it is hard to measure improvement in triathlon as the times are sometimes meaningless due to inaccurate measurements and differing courses and conditions. However, this course was definitely tougher than Manchester but I was 4 minutes faster and I know I am a better athlete today than I was 4 years ago. At the end of the day, if you have an uninterrupted preparation and on the day of the race you feel great (both of which I achieved) then you know you will have raced to the best of your ability and I believe I did the best I could for my country and myself J

It was with great pride that I was able to represent Trinidad and Tobago and I hope my family over there is proud of me!!

I would like to thank the Ian and Jason at the T&T Triathlon Association; Mushtaque, Annette and all the team support staff for their words of encouragement and also Tanya Western for her words of support from afar!! The Games was a fantastic experience and now that I am back in Perth I am enjoying seeing my team mates on TV and cheering them on! I hope I can represent T&T with distinction again in the future and maybe I will be able to pay Trinidad a visit sometime soon as well!!

Secretary General of the Trinidad & Tobago Olympic Committee Brian Lewis will give the feature address at the opening session of a five-day Sport Administration workshop on Wednesday 29th March, 2006. The opening starts at 2pm.

The sport administration workshop will be held at the Media Room of the Jean Pierre Complex, Wrightson Road, Port of Spain.

The workshop is being hosted by the Trinidad & Tobago Olympic Committee (TTOC), and is part of the Australian Caribbean Community Sports Development Programme (ACCSDP) workshop series.

The workshop has been successfully offered in Dominica, St Kitts, St Lucia, St Vincent, Tortola and in South Trinidad.

The five day course is interactive and designed to take participants through a process involving the development of skills and expertise such as negotiation, club and association formation, writing skills, conflict resolution, volunteer management and finance.

A collaboration between the TTOC and TTASPE the workshop is a critical component of the TTOC's affiliate development programme.

The TTOC expects all affiliates to send at least one administrator.

The 15th Association of National Olympic Committee General Assembly (ANOC) began yesterday and will continue until April 8 in Seoul,South Korea.

Anoc is an umbrella organization of the IOC,with 203 member countries.

About 1600 sport leaders are attending the meeting to discuss issues relating to the Olympic games and International Sport.

Also on the agenda is a meeting between The IOC Executive board and National Olympic Committees(NOC) including the TTOC.

TTOC President Larry Romany is in South Korea and will meet with the IOC, International Sport Federation leaders and other Olympic figures.

Romany will use the opportunity to explore avenues for additional financial and technical support for Trinidad and Tobago in the lead up to the Beijing Olympics.

The Trinidad and Tobago Olympic Committee(TTOC) will hold the first of three fitness tests for the upcoming CAC Games on Saturday 8 April at the Jean Pierre Complex .The testing will start at 7AM.

Meeting the TTOC's fitness criteria is compulsory for athletes desirous of representing the country in both individual and team sports at Games under the auspices of the National Olympic Committee.

Twenty-four TTOC affiliates are eligible for the 2006 CAC Games which will be held in Colombia.TTOC General Manager Catherine Forde confirmed that The affiliates have been duly notified and informed that all athletes in consideration for selection must present themselves for the fitness test.

According to TTOC Secretary-General Brian Lewis the process has started over and attendance at the recent Commonwealth Games in Melbourne is no excuse.

Melbourne bronze medalist in the women's shot put Cleopatra Borel-Brown and sprinter Kevon Pierre both competed at the Southern Games last weekend.

This country's Melbourne Hockey,Badminton ,Table tennis and Squash teams are all expected at the Jean Pierre Complex on Saturday morning .

However Missing from Saturday's fitness testing session will be the T&T Under 21 national football team which failed to get pass Dominica and Haiti in the CAC qualifier held in Trinidad earlier this week.

Lewis who was at the Larry Gomes stadium in Arima to witness this country's two CAC qualifying games said that a searching and objective evaluation of the team's disapointing performance is required if T&T is to qualify for the 2006 Pan Am and 2008 Olympic Games football competition.
