As 2023 comes to and end, the Express Sports Department looks back at the athletes and events that shaped the year. Below are some of the most impactful individuals and moments.

Nicholas Paul proves his medal mettle

TOP TTO cyclist Nicholas Paul showed championship turn of speed at the top three competitions he participated in this year.

At the 2023 Pan American Elite Track Cycling Championships in June, Paul pedalled to three medals, including two gold and one silver.

He opened the competition as part of the TTO men’s sprint team, teaming up with Zion Pulido and Kwesi Browne to take silver.

The Gasparillo native then claimed his first gold in the keirin event, before doubling up with gold in the sprint, beating Colombian Kevin Quintero for the top spot on the podium.

That event preceded the UCI Tissot World Track Cycling Championships in Glasgow, Scotland where the 25-year-old gave a solid performance, capturing the silver in the men’s sprint event. Only the world’s best sprinter, the Flying Dutchman Harrie Lavreysen was able to get the better of him. The performance in Glasgow marked Paul down as a definite medal contender for the Paris Olympics next year.

Not quite finished, Paul ended his 2023 season with a gold and silver medal-winning performance at the 2023 Pan American Games in Santiago, Chile.
