International Olympic Committee (IOC) officials insist they have "absolutely no regrets" about awarding the Games to Rio de Janeiro despite the organisation's vice-president John Coates admitting they are the "most difficult...we have ever encountered".

Almaz Ayana provided the opening session of the Rio 2016 athletics programme here with a historic flourish as she took more than 14 seconds off the world 10,000 metres record which has stood, apparently invulnerable, since 1993, claiming the first track and field gold of the Olympics in a time of 29min 17.45sec.

It was an emotional moment for 4 time Olympian Cleopatra Borel after securing her spot in the finals of the Women’s Shot Put.

Cleopatra competed in Group A of the qualifying round, improving on each attempt. Throwing 16.94m and 17.78m and in her first two attempts. Her final throw that sealed the deal for Borel with an improved distance of 18.20m.

Speaking with ESPN Caribbean after an emotional Borel said, “I didn’t make the finals in Beijing and I didn’t make the finals in London and now I’ve worked for four years just to make this finals.” Here is the full interview: http://www.espn.co.uk/video/clip?id=17282214

On arrival back at the Olympic Village, an elated Borel took a few seconds to do shoutout video for her supporters back in Trinidad and Tobago. https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B6UgzvvSpnFbLWI4N0JsRmxGQUE
