Countries will have their final chance to secure qualification to the Rio 2016 gymnastics competition when the Olympic test event gets underway at the Rio Olympic Arena tomorrow.
The countries who failed to book their place in the artistic gymnastics team competitions at last year's International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) World Artistic Gymnastics Championship in Glasgow are due to take part.
Germany will tomorrow join France, The Netherlands, Ukraine, Spain, Romania, Canada and Belarus in competing for the final four places in the men’s event, having place between ninth and 16th in the World Championships qualifying.
On Sunday (April 17), France, Belgium, Germany, Romania, Australia, South Korea and Switzerland look to secure their berth in the women’s team event at the Olympics.
Individual gymnastics will also be able to book their places during the event, while World Championship medallists and numerous athletes whose countries have already qualified have been given the possibility to participate in the competition.
Brazil's Arthur Zanetti, the reigning Olympic champion on rings, and world champion Eleftherios Petrounias of Greece will be among those taking part in the test event.
Petrounias was selected as the first Torchbearer for the Relay ahead of this year's Olympic Games earlier this week and will rush back afterwards for the ceremony in Olympia next Thursday (April 21).
It is hoped that the competition will give the athletes an opportunity to gain a feel for the facilities at the venue, due to stage all three gymnastics events at the Olympics.
"For us as a sports Federation, the test event is a doubly important moment,” said FIG President Bruno Grandi.
“Not only because it's an Olympic qualification with all the challenges that represents for the athletes who have trained hard in hopes of going to the Olympic Games, but also because it allows us to get a feel for things within the confines of the Games four months before the big competition begins.”
Trampoline competition is scheduled to take place next Tuesday (April 19), with rhythmic gymnastics individual events set to take place on April 21.
The rhythmic gymnastics group event competition will bring the test event to a close on April 22.
"Test Events are a vital part of an organising committee's preparations, allowing us to ensure our readiness and fine-tune the venues that will host the competitions in 2016," said Agberto Guimarães, executive director of sport and Paralympic integration for the Rio 2016.
